Great Dental Care for all ages.
The goal of great dental care is to keep your natural teeth all your life.
With good home care and regular professional visits, you just do not have to lose your teeth.
Bacteria are always present in the mouth. When well fed and undisturbed, bacteria adhere to the teeth and multiply into larger and larger colonies called plaque, that appears as a sticky but colorless film on your teeth. The plaque uses food particles (especially refined sugars) to grow more bacteria and to produce acid. You see, plague holds the acid against the tooth enamel and prevents your saliva from mixing with it.
Fortunately, it takes about 24 hours for enough bacteria and acid to build up to do damage to the enamel of your teeth. This is where brushing twice a day is recommended. If you tend to eat a lot of sugar (especially between meals) such as candy, cake, etc., then cleaning the plaque and acid off your teeth may be required more frequently.
Plaque is also the cause of gum disease. The toxins and acids damage the healthy layers of skin that touch the teeth right at the gum-line. Irritated gums become swollen, tender and likely to bleed. Gums that bleed frequently are a definite sign of gum disease.
Tarter is also caused by plaque, that is formed from mineral deposits which get trapped by the plaque and are eventually deposited on the tooth.
Once this happens, professional help is usually needed to remove it. Although tarter itself is not the cause of gum disease, it harbors the bacteria and irritants which indirectly contributes to the problem.
